New Zealand Jobs for Indians in 2026: Visas, Industries, Salaries and the FTA Update
If you are an Indian professional looking at New Zealand for work, 2025-2026 has been a quietly transformative period. The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement was signed and is rolling out new work pathways. Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research qualifications now bypass NZQA assessment. The Accredited Employer Work Visa is open to Indian professionals across most skilled occupations.
This guide covers what changed, which industries are actively hiring Indians, what you will earn, and how to actually go from a job search in India to a visa in hand.
Quick answer
The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) is the main route for Indian professionals to work in New Zealand. With a job offer from an accredited New Zealand employer, you can apply for an AEWV with a fee from NZD $1,540 and an 80% within 6 weeks processing benchmark. From 23 June 2025, qualifications from IIT and IISER are exempt from NZQA assessment. The strongest hiring sectors for Indian professionals are healthcare, IT and software, engineering, construction and infrastructure, and education. Senior professional roles in NZ pay NZD $100,000 to NZD $180,000 depending on field; many roles sit on the Green List, opening direct or fast residence pathways.
What changed for Indian professionals: the FTA and the qualifications update
Two changes in 2025 directly affect Indian skilled migrants:
- Indian qualifications added to the List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment (LQEA), 23 June 2025. The LQEA is INZ's list of foreign qualifications that do NOT need a NZQA assessment for visa purposes. The 23 June 2025 update added qualifications from:
- Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) - all the IITs
- Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER)
- Several other recognised Indian institutions
If your degree is from one of the listed institutions, you save NZD $400 to $750 in NZQA assessment fees, plus 8 to 16 weeks of processing time, plus the document-gathering effort.
- India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement work visa pathways. The FTA, signed in 2025, includes specific provisions easing skilled-worker movement between India and New Zealand. Reporting suggests an allocation of 5,000 work visa opportunities for Indian professionals under the FTA. The exact mechanism is being rolled out; some pathways operate under the AEWV framework with simplified employer requirements, others as standalone categories. Confirm the current FTA visa pathway at immigration.govt.nz and your eligibility specifics with a licensed adviser.

Note: NZD to INR conversion at NZD 1 ~ INR 51 (early May 2026). Exchange rates fluctuate; cost-of-living offsets some of the headline number for Auckland-based roles.
Cost-of-living context: Auckland is the most expensive NZ city. A senior IT professional earning NZD $140,000 in Auckland has roughly the equivalent purchasing power, after rent, of a senior IT professional earning INR 50-65 lakh in Bangalore - the headline number is much bigger but rent and groceries take a larger share. Christchurch and Hamilton give meaningfully better take-home value.
The visa pathway: AEWV is your primary route
For most Indian professionals, the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) is the route. The full step-by-step process is in our AEWV guide, but in short:
- Find an accredited NZ employer who is willing to sponsor you. Most large employers (banks, consultancies, listed tech firms, hospitals, major engineering consultancies) are accredited.
- Receive a job offer when the employer has a Job Check approval from INZ on your role.
- Once a Job Check is approved, the employer sends you a unique link to apply.
- Lodge your AEWV application with all required documents - NZD $1,540 fee, 80% decided within 6 weeks.
- Receive your eVisa, travel to New Zealand, start work.
If your role is on the Green List Tier 1, you can often skip the work-first step entirely and apply directly for the Straight to Residence Visa.
English language: do you need IELTS or PTE?
Most Indian professionals do NOT need to provide an English test result for an AEWV if your occupation is in a Skill level 1, 2, or 3 role. The English language requirement applies only if your job is at ANZSCO skill level 4 or 5 (lower-skilled occupations) or appears on a specific list of occupations requiring English.
For ANZSCO skill level 1, 2, or 3 roles - which covers software engineers, doctors, nurses, registered engineers, qualified teachers, accountants, and most other professional Indian occupations - no English test is required. The relevant test for residence applications (rather than the AEWV itself) is a different matter; we cover that in our residence guides.
Acceptable English evidence for those who do need it:
Acceptable English evidence for AEWV (only required if ANZSCO skill 4-5 or specific listed occupation)
| Type | Acceptable evidence |
| IELTS (General or Academic) | Minimum overall band 4.0; validity 2 years from test date |
| TOEFL iBT | Minimum overall score 31; validity 2 years |
| PTE Academic | Minimum overall score 29; validity 2 years |
| Cambridge English (B1, B2, etc.) | Minimum equivalent CEFR level; validity 2 years |
| Passport-based exemption | Passport from UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia, or South Africa |
| Employment-based exemption | 5+ years recognised employment in an English-speaking country |
| Qualification-based exemption | Recognised qualification taught in English (rules vary by country and qualification level) |
What stands in the way: 4 things that delay or block Indian applications
From our experience working with Indian clients:
- Police clearance certificate from India. Issued by the regional Passport Office. Typically 4-8 weeks; can be longer in some states. Allow 8-12 weeks if you live abroad and need to apply from a consulate. From 8 December 2025, INZ no longer accepts a receipt; you must have the actual certificate at lodgement.
- NZQA assessment of your qualification (if not on LQEA). For non-IIT/IISER degrees, allow 8-16 weeks for NZQA International Qualifications Assessment. Start this in parallel with your job search.
- Documenting work history. NZ employers and INZ both expect detailed work-history evidence: confirmation letters from past employers, PF records, salary bank statements, payslips, and project portfolio. Indian employers vary widely in how willing they are to provide formal letters; start asking former managers early.
- Family applications. Partners and dependent children apply on supporting visas. Common gaps: insufficient relationship evidence (proof of cohabitation, joint financial commitments, communications history), birth certificates not translated, dependent visa documentation incomplete. You must also meet the income requirements: at least 80% of the median wage to support a partner work visa, and at least NZD $58,240 per year to support a Dependent Child Student Visa or Child of a Worker Visitor Visa.

Frequently asked questions
Can Indians get a job in New Zealand without a degree?
Some skilled trades and care roles are available without a degree, especially on Tier 2 of the Green List. Most professional roles require a recognised degree or equivalent professional registration.
Are Indian degrees recognised in New Zealand?
From 23 June 2025, qualifications from IIT and IISER (and several other listed institutions) are exempt from NZQA assessment. Other Indian qualifications usually need NZQA International Qualifications Assessment.
What is the minimum salary for an AEWV for Indian professionals?
The role must pay at the threshold specified for the occupation. Where no specific threshold applies, the floor is the NZ immigration median wage (NZD $35.00 per hour from 9 March 2026, roughly INR 18 lakh per year on a full-time basis at current exchange rates).
How long does the AEWV take for Indian applicants?
INZ benchmark is 80% within 6 weeks of complete submission. Plan for 8-10 weeks from offer to visa-in-hand on a clean application.
Do I need IELTS for an AEWV?
Only if your job is at ANZSCO skill level 4 or 5 or on a specific list. Most senior and skilled professional roles (software engineer, doctor, nurse, registered engineer, accountant) are skill level 1-3 and require no test.
Can I bring my family from India?
Yes. Partners and dependent children can apply for supporting visas (Partner of a Worker Work Visa; Dependent Child Visa). You must meet the income requirements (the AEWV holder must earn at least 80% of the median wage to support a partner work visa; at least NZD $58,240 per year to support a Dependent Child Student Visa or Child of a Worker Visitor Visa). Strong relationship and dependency evidence is essential.
What is the India-New Zealand FTA visa pathway?
The 2025 FTA includes work-visa provisions for Indian professionals, with reporting indicating an allocation of 5,000 work visa opportunities. The exact mechanism is being rolled out; some pathways operate under the AEWV framework with simplified requirements. Confirm at immigration.govt.nz.
How does NZ compare to Australia or Canada for Indians?
NZ is faster on residence for Green List occupations than Australia or Canada, but pays less than Australia and somewhat less than Canada. NZ has stronger work-life balance signalling. Australian salary for a senior software engineer in Sydney is typically 20-30% higher than Auckland; Canadian Toronto roles vary widely. Many Indian professionals choose NZ for the lifestyle and the speed of residence.
How do I find a job in New Zealand from India?
Apply through Seek NZ (seek.co.nz), LinkedIn New Zealand, and direct company careers pages. Most large NZ employers run remote interview loops for international candidates. Start by targeting AEWV-accredited employers; their websites usually note this on careers pages. Specialist Indian-NZ recruiters: Talent NZ, Robert Walters, Hays.
