The Coalition Government has confirmed that overseas-based investors holding a New Zealand Active Investor Plus residence visa will be permitted to purchase or build one residential property, with a minimum value of $5 million.

This adjustment balances the foreign buyer ban with the Government’s goal of attracting high-value investment, skills, and global connections to grow New Zealand’s economy.

Key points:

The ban on foreign residential property ownership remains in place for others.

Active Investor Plus visa holders must invest a minimum of $5 million and meet health and character requirements.

Over 300 applications have been received since the visa’s re-launch, representing potential investments exceeding $1.8 billion.

Holders of the previous Investor 1 & 2 visas will also be eligible under this change.

This move strengthens New Zealand’s position as an attractive destination for high-net-worth investors while ensuring housing market integrity.
